Dr. Robert Miller, DMD
Orthodontist · Board Certified, American Board of Orthodontics
Dr. Bob Miller studied at Clemson University, earned his dental degree at the Medical University of South Carolina, and trained in orthodontics at the Medical College of Virginia. He then served three years in the U.S. Air Force as Chief of Orthodontics at Clark Air Base in the Philippines, and began practicing in Charlottesville and Culpeper, Virginia, in 1988. He is also a past president of the Virginia Association of Orthodontists.
Board Certified, American Board of Orthodontics
Founded in 1929 as the first specialty board in dentistry, the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) is partnered with the American Association of Orthodontists and is recognized by the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards as the only national certifying board for Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Dr. Miller achieved Board Certified status in 1992, voluntarily re-certified in 2008, and is now classified as lifetime certified. Fewer than a third of practicing orthodontists hold this credential.
Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists
In addition to being a Board-Certified Diplomate, Dr. Bob Miller has been invited as one of a select group of orthodontists with the distinction of being a member of the prestigious Edward H. Angle Society.
Only a select few orthodontists are chosen worldwide to become a candidate after displaying a high level of academic and clinical excellence as well as being a positive contributor to the profession. To achieve full membership, chosen orthodontists must complete and present clinical case reports and a written report in a format suitable for publication. Members must then continue to display competence to maintain their membership.
Dr. Miller was accepted into the Angle Society’s North Atlantic component in 2012 after presenting original research in Barcelona, Spain. That research was published in The Angle Orthodontist, orthodontics’ most prestigious journal.
Membership in the Angle Society is by invitation only. Today, the Angle Society has only approximately 660 members worldwide, and only five percent of orthodontists in the United States are members.
A Pioneer in Appliance Design
In the early 1990s, Dr. Miller used CAD/CAM technology to develop the Flip Lock™ Herbst appliance. Today he works with Dr. Duncan Higgins, developer of the Crossbow™ appliance, to expand its use for overbite correction. Paired with LightForce custom 3D braces, it’s one of the most advanced ways to correct an overbite.
Both doctors were recently issued a patent for a retainer and aligner wear-time tracking indicator.
Professional Contributions
Dr. Miller writes regularly for peer-reviewed orthodontic journals.
He is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the World Federation of Orthodontists, the Rocky Mountain Society of Orthodontists, the Virginia Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, and the Virginia Dental Association. He also led the Spear Study Club of Northern Virginia and belonged to the Northern Virginia Orthodontic Study Club.
